What is sterling silver jewelry?

Silver in its purest form is extremely soft metal, which is problematic for making jewelry and other items. As a solution, pure silver is mixed with another common metal to create a much harder metal. Frequently this other metal is copper, which is what is used in the pieces we offer. Copper provides the necessary hardness without impacting the gorgeous color. The term indication “925” which is stamped on most pieces means that the piece is “sterling silver”, comprised on 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of the other metal.

Storing Sterling Silver Jewelry

Even the finest sterling silver jewelry will tarnish over the course of time. We strongly recommend that you store your jewelry in a zip-lock style bag, a cloth pouch, tarnish prevention cloths, or a special compartment in your jewelry box. Minimize contact with other pieces to avoid the possibility of scratching your silver. Cool, dry places are ideal for storing silver. The more exposure to the open air, particularly in humid climates, the faster silver will begin to tarnish. Oxidation from the air, moisture, skin and even sunshine will contribute to tarnishing. Your silver jewelry will initially take on a golden hue, and the piece will eventually turn black. All of our pieces in inventory are stored and shipped in zip-lock style or otherwise tightly secure plastic bags.

Caring For Sterling Silver Jewelry

To keep your sterling silver looking as good as new:

  • Avoid contact with wood, as certain woods are known to dull the finish
  • Avoid contact with common household chemicals, for instance ammonia, acetone, and bleach
  • Remove your sterling silver before going in the swimming pool
  • Purchase a sterling silver polishing cloth, treated cloths that can be purchased inexpensively in your local area from jewelers or other stores
  • Wipe down your jewelry with a polishing cloth or even a 100% cotton cloth.
  • Use polishes specially formulated to remove tarnish. Polishes can be purchased at hardware or craft stores.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions regarding jewelry care! With proper storage and care, your sterling silver can last a lifetime.
